Go Club at Bayshore this Saturday

Last Saturday, despite the snow on the ground, the tournament at the Domes New Year Festival successfully made contact with several new (but experienced) go players, as well as a number of intrigued high schoolers and their parents.

This Saturday, we hope we can welcome some of these players (if they aren't at one of the several Chinese New Year's parties) at Bayshore at our usual time: 7pm near Board Game Barrister.

These next couple of weeks would also be a great time for beginners to sign up for lessons Sundays 4-5 pm at Marquette's LaLumiere Hall for the spring semester. Go to mmcsweb.com and look for the 2012 Spring Registration link on the RIGHT SIDE of the page.

The great news is that another organization has gotten involved in go in Milwaukee, so there's a little more go action happening these days.
They're hosting a tournament Saturday 1/21 at the Mitchell Park Domes Chinese New Year celebration. See the link/attachment for details.
NOTE: REGISTER BY FRIDAY JAN 13th for FREE ADMISSION.
Registration is possible after that but admission to the Domes may not be included.

A reminder that go lessons are available on Sundays at 4-5pm in LaLumiere Hall Room 262 on the Marquette Univ campus.

For the first time this year, we have some opportunities to do go demos at the Holiday Folk Fair and spread the word about go.

GO night: Yes, 9/24 is a 4th Saturday

First things first: This Saturday, 9/24 is a 4th Saturday, and thus it is a GO night. See you at Board Game Barrister inside Bayshore Town Center (Bayshore mall) anytime after 7pm! There's usually people playing till at least 8:30 but often quite a bit later than that. If you want to check, you can call Board Game Barrister and ask — 414-963-2100. They're good for directions, too.

Second: Somebody approached me and proposed that we host an annual 13×13 "express go" tournament to be held at the Mitchell Park Domes in January/February (near the Lunar New Year). And we'll probably have some space at the Holiday Folk Fair for a demo sometime during that (weekend before Thanksgiving).

Third: There's still space in the go class Sunday afternoons at Marquette. It's only $35 for the whole semester (Sept – January), which is a good deal. Go to "register" at www.MMCSweb.com.

Regular GO club meeting: This Saturday 9/10 was our first meeting of the new school year. Second and fourth Saturdays at Seven is the regular meeting time for the go club.

GO classes: Kyu-level players may register for go classes that meet Sundays 4pm-5pm during the school year on the campus of Marquette University in LaLumiere Hall. Register now at www.mmcsweb.com. Click on Registration and follow the instructions there; look for the Extra Classes button and select GO. It is only about $35 for the whole semester. E-mail if you have any questions.

Tomorrow (7/9, the 2nd Sat) it's a regular go night, outside Board Game Barrister at Bayshore mall.
Come over and play, AND get your advance registration taken care of so you don't have to stand in line to get into the museum on the morning of the tournament. Deadline for advance registration is 7/15.

In two weeks (7/23, the 4th Sat), the tournament is taking place INSTEAD of go night.
(Show up 10:30am at MAM, not 7pm at Bayshore!)
It's shaping up to be a great event, with new players (棋友) to meet and a fantastic atmosphere.

MAM Go Tournament final arrangements all set!

Yesterday we met with the officials at the Milwaukee Art Museum and made final arrangements for the tournament on Saturday July 23. They'll have 10 tables for us just outside the room with the Chinese watercolors on traditional scrolls. So far we already have 5 people coming from out of state; this should be fun! See below for registration. There will also be a separate non-tournament area for anyone who doesn't feel ready to commit to tournament play but who is interested in learning more about the game.

Hi,

Plans are moving along for the go tournament/festival on Sat 7/23 at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The museum opens at 10 and the first hour or so will be free play and estimating ranks of people who don't know an approximate ranking. Then there will be tournament play until about 3pm, or until people finish four games.

Registration forms will be ready soon. AGA membership is required ($10-30) but can be purchased at the door. Bonus: All participants will receive a FREE copy of Vital Points and Skillful Finesse for Sabaki, donated by publisher Chris Greene of Hinoki Press.

In the meantime, see you this Saturday at 7 at Bayshore for go night at Board Game Barrister (every 2nd and 4th Saturday).

Milwaukee Go Club this Saturday & July 23

The Milwaukee Go Club meets this Saturday (as it normally does every 2nd and 4th Saturday)
at 7pm at Bayshore mall near Board Game Barrister.

And -- save the date -- the go festival+tournament at the Milwaukee Art Museum Summer of China is ON for Saturday July 23. Tournament play will take place INSIDE the special exhibits. What an atmosphere! See the special exhibit website:

The festival is for people who don't feel ready to play in a tournament (e.g., little kids who are not serious about the game, or people who are just curious and passing by).

The tournament will be an official AGA-rated handicap tournament (4-6 games, with minimal waiting time between games).
If you don't have an approximate rating, come about an hour early so you can play a bit and we can get you properly matched and handicapped.

I'm not sure about the registration fee yet but besides admission to the museum and special exhibit, I've just received confirmation that Hinoki Press will donate one of their well-regarded books to everyone who registers. You'll need to be(come) a member of the AGA (American Go Association) but prices for that are very reasonable and you can feel good about supporting the existence of a go community in the USA.

I think this will be a fabulous day! Please let me know if you think you can take part, and/or invite a friend. If they're not a go player, bring them to the museum. I'm confident you'll find it worthwhile. Spread the word!

In other news -- we are hoping to host a go festival & go tournament at the Milwaukee Art Museum during its
Summer of China Chinese Cultural Festival, on July 23.
Your registration fee will get you into the rated tournament, admission to the festival, and admission to the fabulous exhibit
(showing only in Boston, NY, and Milwaukee before returning to Beijing). There's a chance you would also receive a go book from Hinoki Press. Tentatively we are thinking of registration of $25.
If all goes well, this would be a handicapped tournament run by Bob Barber from Chicago.
Tentatively, the plan is for games to take place inside the galleries.

1) This Saturday at 7:00 is our regularly scheduled meeting. See you there!

2) A note to consider: There are go lessons offered on Sunday afternoons at 4:00.
You can sign up at mmcsweb.com or e-mail here for more info or help in signing up.

3) Anyone who signs up as a member of the American Go Association gets to
have official ratings, and weekly go-related e-mail notices. Please consider it.

4) We are thinking of having a go tournament (for dan level players) / workshop (for kyu level players) / festival (for newcomers) this summer.
Can I assume you'd all be interested in participating? Anyone interested in helping?
Do people have a preference as to whether it takes place in mid-late June or late August?
or as part of a Chinese festival July 23-24? I think we'd get less big names from Chicago+Madison
if it's in July, since the annual Go Congress takes place soon thereafter in Santa Barbara, California.
There's some time urgency on the scheduling, so please reply within the next few days

Happy lucky go friends in the year of the rabbit,

There was a great turnout at the Domes and we ran out of the 20 brochures that we brought.
I should have brought more brochures, and a real camera, because it was fantastic.

We also now have a banner stand and a banner to go with it!

Per Lisa Scott's suggestion, we're meeting on 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. This is a change to the schedule, which used to be every other week. See you next Saturday (second Saturday of November) starting at 7pm! We'll be playing somewhere in the vicinity of Board Game Barrister. If for some reason we're not visible, come into the store and they should be able to direct you. Also -- we ran into a problem with this last time -- the mall is still stopping people under 18 (without an adult) at the door on weekends, despite the fact that they took down the big signs. The security guards said later that it would be okay to ask them to take a message to whoever is already at the table and have them come out to fetch you. Or make sure a parent can walk you in.

Good and bad news for Milwaukee GO

Dear Milwaukee Go community,

You may have heard the terrible news already: Kay Ishizuka, who was a prime mover in the Milwaukee GO scene, and the originator of this blog, was hit by a car and killed last week. The first time I met her, she introduced me to the go club. The last time I saw her, she had traveled up from Florida to defend her PhD dissertation -- but had, from half a continent away, organized a go tournament here for that same weekend, complete with beautiful flyers. She was so helpful and energetic with the tournament that I had no idea her "other" activity of the weekend was such a momentous and important one. If people are interested, we can create some kind of memorial -- perhaps an event in her honor.

Now for some more positive news. This Saturday night at 7pm, we have the honor of hosting Lisa Scott, newly elected Central Region Director of the American Go Association. This will be a great chance to connect with the wider go world: regional, national, and international. Lots of great opportunities!

The go club will meet Friday night 5/21 and then 6/4. In the fall, due to schedule conflicts with "Friday Night Magic-the-Gathering," GO night will likely be moved to a different day (or, less likely, a different place). Please contact milwaukeegoclub@gmail.com if you have ideas about this.

Also, we are thinking of having a GO festival at the end of August, similar to the tournament but more for fun and introducing people to the game, and less an actual competition. Anybody willing to help with that, please also be in touch.

Registration is free and open to everyone.
Winners get gift certificates as prizes.
Join anytime for open playing.
Beginners lessons available for those who wish to learn how to play.

The people of Cyclone Go Club at Iowa State University is hosting Iowa Weekend of Go. Here is the information:

The Cyclone Go Club is happy to invite all of you to our biggest event
of the semester, the Iowa Weekend of Go. This is a two day event with
a Go Seminar on Saturday and the All-Iowa Tournament on Sunday
(December 7 and 8).

What: Iowa Weekend of GO
When: December 6 and 7
Where: Iowas State University

The seminar on December 6 is a full day seminar with lectures in the
morning and games in the afternoon, after lunch. You will have a
chance to implement the new knowledge you acquire and then have the
game reviewed. The seminar is prepared by our own Kyle Blocher, who
has been actively studying Go since January 2006 and teaching since
January 2007. In the summer of 2008 Kyle went to China to train under
Liu Yuanbo 2P. Currently Kyle offers private lessons and is also
teaching a Go class at Iowa State University. He is currently a
4-dan amateur (http://www.stuorg.iastate.edu/cygo/go_lessons.html).

Fee -- Club Member: $25 (Pre-Registration), $45 (At-Door)
Non Member: $35 (Pre-Registration), $55 (At-Door)

It's every other Friday at 7-9pm, starting from September 19th.

The Board Game Barrister hosts Games Nights on Friday and Saturday nights. You can play any of their open board games. And, admission is free! So, having Go meeting on Fridays means you get play Go AND board games, which is awesome.
